tos kirk gets overshadowed a lot by his pop culture depiction as a machismo womanizer which could not be further from the truth. unfortunately he also gets overshadowed by bones’s and spock’s personalities which appear to be worn closer to the surface and are more imitable. but kirk is such a Good Guy and a Good Captain and hes Funny and Smart and Caring and he could choose to run his ship like a hierarchy but instead he chooses to run it like a family and he goes around space trying to make other peoples’ lives better while forgetting about his own needs repeatedly. he’s self-sacrificing and hilarious and theatrical and noble and he wears pink and he’s even jewish and bisexual. he tried to kill god. i love him

autistic characters getting bullied by neurotypicals is a common trope, but in this novel, ingenious dynamic, two autistic guys beat up on each other

is hyper empathetic and has Alexithymia (feeling things so deeply and having a hard time pinning them down is what leads to the grumpy disposition we all love so much)
is hypo sensitive to touch (which is why he always stands so close to Jim) and has a weighted blanket
same foods and is sensitive to certain food textures and loves all foods simple and plain
has special interests in medicine/psychology
wears a ring on his pinky at all times because it’s a comfort item
happy stims by bouncing on his toes
is supremely organized to combat visual over stim from things being scattered all over
has specific morning and bedtime routines to balance out the hecticness/unpredictability that comes with working on a starship
goes non-verval/semi-verbal when upset or overwhelmed
can usually maintain regular conversation but uses medical terms and idioms and phrases back home as scripts and echolalia
has difficulty with volume control and intonation
auditory stims with the beeping and chirping of the consoles (which is why is he’s on the bridge so often)
tends to roam a person’s face instead of making eye contact
hids his raptor hands by holding something close to his chest/tries to fold his arms instead
wears heeled boots because it’s almost like toe walking and isn’t as obvious of a stim
has strong black and white thinking

The final frontier is actually pretty good star trek content considering it's borderline slapstick comedy for an hour straight then it hits you with a horribly gutwrenching McCoy scene out of nowhere and then Spock blows up god with a torpedo. Average trek experience

McCoy tells people he loves them by bullying them and if that's not undiagnosed autism, then I don't know what is. He also constantly fidgets with things. The tri-corder, his medical scanner, any rock, gadget, or paperclip he can find. And he does it the most when he's trying to think or calm himself down. When he's not fidgeting, he puts his hands away behind his back, generally in the company of strangers and higher-ups who might see his fidgeting as distracting or weird. And he's grumpy. He doesn't like having his routine disrupted (autistic), he probably doesn't like certain textures or sounds. He makes snap judgements about people and chooses whether to trust them based on a gut feeling. Captain James Kirk was his first real friend because Kirk didn't ever judge him for being cranky all the time and he let him talk about his special interests (medicine, history, and psychology) and about his various hyperfixations through the years. I bet McCoy was bullied a lot as a kid and tried to hide his feelings about it until adulthood, and that's part of why he's so hard on Spock for repressing his human side. He's still learning to regulate his own emotions and has to constantly remind himself not to yell at his superiors just because they're endagering human lives. He's passionate and it comes out in shouting at Jim that's he's a doctor, damnit.

see heres the thing vulcans are space jews but spock is a space jew and a regular jew but he decided to have a brush with death in the desert instead of a bar mitzvah cuz he was going thru it and worf is a regular jew and you cant see his bar mitzvah photos because he thinks theyre embarrassing

ok as local tmp apologist YES it is VERY MUCH aout spock being gay but its also bout spock being a GAY JEW. he is SEARCHING FOR A GOD TO CONDEMN OR ACCEPT HIM AND HIS LOVE. AND HE FINDS GOD IS NOT IN THE THUNDERSTORM OR THE DRY WORD, IT IS NOT IN DRY ADHERENCE TO THE RULES BECAUSE THEY ARE RULES, BUT PROTECTING THEIR BEAUTY AND THEIR MEANING OF THE WORLD

i'm just going to go ahead and make this its own post. when kirk teases spock he is SO GENTLE. "why mister spock are you feeling emotion?" and he lets spock do the vulcan equivalent of giggling and kicking his feet and going "haha nooo silly i'm a VULCAN i don't do that!!" and kirk's like "oh my apologies mister spock of COURSE not" and then they make consensual loving eyecontact with one another while smiling. when BONES senses blood in the water (spock having an emotion) he will grab spock by the scruff of his fucking neck and shake until dead. like a dog with a squirrel.

kirk’s biggest asset as a captain is that he always goes with the flow no matter what. if he accidentally warps into an evil dimension where everything sucks he’s like well the only way to solve this is to be an evil captain who sucks. mr sulu prime the death torpedos and fire on the innocent civilians while I retire to my quarters. if he gets challenged to wrestle his best friend to death in the middle of a vulcan fuck ceremony he has no problem doing that. in one episode they went back in time to the great depression and kirk immediately stole a bunch of clothes from a balcony and got a job sweeping basements. guy who has terminal commit to the bit syndrome

What if Leonard McCoy is so adamant that Spock demonstrate his emotions because he was shamed for being overly emotional as a child–babyish or unmanly–and because he struggles with emotional dysregulation he was never able to keep a lid on to the satisfaction of his parents.

So at some point, he stopped trying, and every time Spock is ashamed of emotional expression or complains to him about his expressiveness, it takes him back.

kirk/spock is so special because spock is so loved. he is an outsider in so many ways but he is so absolutely transcendentally loved by kirk. and kirk never asks spock to love him in kirks way. spock loving him in spocks way is always enough
