TOS Season One Episode Notes

S1E1: The Man Trap

S1E2: Charlie "X"

S1E3: Where No Man Has Gone Before

S1E4: The Naked Time

  • Absolute brutal violation of PPE protocols just to kick off this episode in a really funny way
  • Bones ribbing Spock about his vitals -- hard to tell if this is supposed to highlight the 'banter' in their relationship or if they're just trying to highlight Spock's 'Alien' status in a way that comes across as way stranger on Bones' character than it should lol. Anyway, established: Spock has a naturally high heart rate w/ low blood pressure & has green blood.
  • Truly though I cannot get enough of the Rattlesnack SFX that plays every time a character looks at their hands lmao
  • Everyone else in the mess just Watching as Joey pulls a knife on Sulu & Riley and then himself is also really funny. What are y'all doing back there? They don't even look that intrigued.
  • Since Uhura temporarily takes over for Riley when he starts getting delirious it implies more of a Universalized rather than Specialized type of training -- anyone permitted on the Bridge is Capable of doing everyone's job
  • "You either leave this war bloody, or with my blood on your souls" kind of an iconic line ngl
  • Everyone fighting for their life trying to cut Riley's shipwide transmission off and failing; i get it though
  • Spock's little compass tool.... what are you?
  • Spock's bewildered almost-sneer as he watches Chapel confess at him a very gay-autistic expression 2 me (as someone who's stuck w/ it as one of two resting facial expressions lol)
  • Everyone say 'Thank You Mr. Nimoy' for refusing to shoot the originally written version of the scene where Spock cries as someone teases him in the lift & instead insisting that Spock would do everything in his power to maintain his dignity & go find someplace to be by himself if he was going to break down (and then shooting said scene in a single take)
    • also, Autism moment: angry hand punch / desperately trying to recite times tables in an effort to ground himself
    • Also sorry but it is kind of funny that Spock is despairing over not having told his mother he loves her given that she's very much alive and he could just call her at any time lol
  • Kirk problem solving: Shake and Rattle until fixed
  • "Jim when I feel friendship for you, I'm ashamed." Much 2 unpack; esp wrt that tumblr post that talks about second languages and perhaps the deliberation in choosing the word Ashamed given its similarity to the Vulcan petname Ashayam
  • Also much to unpack in the way Spock only really seems to pull himself together as he watches Kirk fall apart.
  • Bones yanking Kirk's shirt apart for no tangible reason - Excellent end note

S1E5: The Enemy Within

  • ALIEN DOG!!! I watched this episode once in the living room w/ my mom around & she promptly called like three different people just to tell them about this dog & its little horn and straw antannae. She says he looks kind of like one of our dogs lol
  • I love the set design for TOS so much; more vibrant colors & buttons and switches on things forever, I'm sick of looking at glassy white touch screens
  • Evil!Kirk beam in scene forever close to my heart I love the complete and utter lack of subtlety in this show sometimes
  • Bones' medical windex my beloved
  • Also Bones' main instinct reaction being Freeze is a great character fact -- Evil!Kirk in thie episode, Khan in 'Space Seed', Mirror!Spock in Mirror Mirror -- when Bones gets Grabbed he just kind of stands there and doesn't react.
    • you know what actually.. Autism Moment
  • Love it when Spock puts his hands on his hips
  • Arguably it's just to be pointed about the Duplicate stuff, but it is at least a little deranged that Kirk was allowed to come in to question Rand when she was accusing him of assaulting her. Like surely there are better protocols in place for things like that.
  • Love it when they used body doubles in this show that don't look a single fucking thing like the original actor lmao; 60s TV screens had it made though I'd guess
  • "If I seem insensitive to what you're going through, Captain, understand: it's the way I am" - Spock I love you so much. Autism Moment
  • Lovvvveee all of the little sound effects in this show -- scene where they try to merge the dog alien back into one animal is absolutely Full of them
  • the kind of heartbroken expression on Kirk's face when he finally pulls his other half in for that hug.,, much 2 think about
  • KIRK: Mister Spock. / SPOCK: Captain? / KIRK: If this doesn't work. / SPOCK: Understood, Captain. -- love characters that can have conversations without really saying anything at all
  • SPOCK: The, er, impostor had some interesting qualities, wouldn't you say, Yeoman? -- for the Life of me I cannot figure out what Spock means by this lmao, is he making fun of Rand? Commiserating with her?? What's going on there ?

S1E6: Mudd's Women

  • Spock glancing around at the other crewmen who are visibly entranced by the women in confused bewilderment - Gay Spock moments
  • Also his little eyebrow-raise head tilt when he leaves Kirk's office-room with the women; Spock I love you so much
  • Actually worth noting that Kirk is seemingly also unaffected by the women's allure, commenting in his log that he's more concerned about the crew's reactions to them than mentioning any preoccupation with the women themselves.
  • Also I really can't stand the Computer's voice in this show; Hal 9000 being the turning point for fictional AIs getting smooth, humanized voices instead of tinny robotic Noise if only you'd come out 2 years earlier :(
  • Like the cut to Spock's indulgent little smirk when he's listening to McCoy think out loud trying to problem solve on the bridge
  • Are Eve and Childress supposed to have some kind of chemistry here? bc i'm not sure i see it, not even in whatever 'beauty in self-confidence' message this episode is pushing lol.
    • Can at least appreciate Kirk taking the time to check in with Eve to make sure she's actually alright with sticking around to talk to Childress though
  • "A most annoying emotional episode." - Spock isn't wrong lol
  • Established: Vulcan hearts located in their sides. Can appreciate Spock's "The fact that my internal arrangement differs from yours, Doctor, pleases me no end." line also lol
